Welcome

At Memorial Wood we have been helping pet owners in their time of need since 2011.
As devoted pet lovers ourselves we understand how very hard it is to say goodbye to our best friends and companions.
Individual-only pet cremation is offered and we do not undertake any form of mass or 'communal' cremation or incineration of waste.
We are a small, caring service in a lovely rural setting and can ensure that
each and every pet is handled with kindness.
Our crematorium is located on our arable farm here on the Nottinghamshire / Leicestershire borders, with a reception office at our farmhouse.
Our responsive service means that your pet's ashes will be available in 48 hrs*

WE ARE OPEN WEEKDAYS ONLY, 9am - 6pm
We do not operate an out of hours service I'm afraid.

Care of your pet's body when we are closed
Your vet may store your pet or, if at home, the following guide will help....
Wrap clean towels around head and bottom end of your pet
Fully wrap him or her in a fresh, clean old sheet or pillow case, depending on size
Make sure there are no gaps so that the body is protected, a nice secure package
Place your pet in a pet carrier, lidded box or pet bed, again, depending on size
Now put in as cold a room as you have or, if safe, a garage or outbuilding that is cool
Place away from any wall that absorbs warmth from the sun
Ideally, put freezer blocks around body or simple bags of ice from the supermarket wrapped in newspaper or tea towels. These can be replaced if they thaw,
Remember warmth and pests are your main enemy so cold and protection are the key.

About Us

We set up our small, caring pet crematorium on our farm in 2011. Since then we have gained the trust and respect of many local veterinary practices and see pet owners coming to us from the nearby borders of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. Now we also see many friends and family recommendations.

Pet Cremation Services

Memorial Wood only undertakes INDIVIDUAL cremation on our own premises, and guarantees that your pet is cremated on it's own and their ashes only are returned to you.
You are welcome to make saying goodbye as personal as you wish. You could leave a favourite toy, treats, flowers, photos or a letter, you may want a collar left on, or for their own blanket to be laid over them.
You may want your pet cremated just as they are!, but whatever you want, your pet will be handled with care and kindness at all times.

Bring Your Pet Yourself

I am only a phone call away and, generally, do not need too much notice but you will need to book an appointment.
I can usually receive your pet on the day that you call, unless it is later in the afternoon.
We have a small quiet, private room where your pet may be laid and you can spend time saying a final goodbye.
Arrangements will be discussed in my reception office where you will see all of the caskets and urns available to choose from.
Your pet's ashes will be available within a day or two for collection, or whenever you feel ready to come.

Arrange Collection of Your Pet

We can arrange collection of your pet from a local vets within a 10 mile radius free of charge.
For vets further afield, in the city centre or from your home, we can arrange a private pet ambulance. We need a some prior notice for this, ideally 24 hours, and it does incur a fee - see Prices

Caskets and Urns

We have an excellent selection of caskets and urns to choose from, and most owners will wish to keep their pet's ashes at home or scatter them in their own special, favourite place.
Uniquely, though, we have our own scattering ground which you may wish to use.

Memorial Wood

Our little scattering wood summer update.......
We got off to a good start in the spring with mowing the paths back into shape.
Then as 'summer' came along, with the wettest June ever, the mowing took a backward step!
Although keeping on top of the grass in these early years of the wood's development is good for appearance sake, the most important thing is the growth of the trees and shrubs. These are doing really well and the wood is taking shape beautifully. The Pine trees tend to put on too much top growth which can make them unstable in the wet winter soil. We do our best to keep these well staked and, so far, only lost a couple.
All the other trees, and especially some of the shrubs, are looking good.

This is a NATURAL scattering ground and, eventually, when the trees are big enough, the grass will be shaded out to be replaced with a proper woodland floor. I will then plant bluebells which will thrive in that environment. It will feel sheltered, as woodlands do, and not at the mercy of it's exposed hill top blustery position.

SADLY, there was a very upsetting incident in the winter where a bird got caught in a hanging tree decoration. Although I am always stressing that this is a NATURAL setting for scattering ashes, I also understand that pet owners may wish to place small tokens for their pet when they visit.
But, please, no more ornaments in the trees or otherwise. Metal and plastic don't really sit well in a wood do they. Let's just encourage the wildlife to make a happy home here free from danger.
Thank you

About the woodland scattering option
A beautiful fledgling wood with little paths mowed through it and benches for you to sit back on, reflect and enjoy the peace and quiet. You may scatter your pet's ashes here around the tree of your choice. A special tree marker plaque will be engraved with your own chosen wording. A final, permanent resting place in a completely natural setting.
In the summer you will hear Sky Larks singing high over head, they are a ground nesting bird who have always made their home here at Highfields. Very often a Hare suddenly bolts out of the long grass! You would never know it had been there.

The Memorial Wood Option with tree dedication costs £75
There are no annual fees thereafter.
Also available for pet's ashes you may already have and wish to lay to rest in a permanent natural setting.

Highfields Farm and the Convent are private property. Memorial Wood is open to customers of the pet crematorium only, thank you.
